Picturesque ride along the Northern shore of the Gulf of Finland will bring you to the Naval base Kronstadt which was started by Peter I in 1704 as the fortress to lock the Gulf of Finland. Till 1990-s the city was closed for visitors . Nowadays you can visit the old Naval base, walk around its park and visit Konstantine Fort. Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas was built by the architect Kosiakovsky in the 20th century dominates the skyline of the island. There is a museum of Russian navy in the cathedral.
